Like all schools of study on our campus, the Sherman Lewis School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences takes immense pride in extending opportunities that make college more affordable for our students. Below you can find information regarding scholarship opportunities through the Langston University School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.

The 1890 Scholarship Program sponsored by the United Stated Department of Agriculture (USDA) and offered through the Langston University Sherman Lewis School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (LU-SL/SAAS) was established in January 2020 and is part of an endowment to the 1890 land-grant university community. The purpose of the Scholarship Program is to support training of undergraduate students at 1890 land-grant universities (e.g. Langston University), resulting in degrees in the food and agricultural sciences and closely related areas as defined by the USDA.
At Langston University, there are three categories’ of 1890 scholarships. This application package is for senior high school students who maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, exhibit exemplary leadership traits, and participate in community service activities. These Scholarships will support most of the successful students’ tuition, room/board and fees on an annual basis. Additionally, the 1890 Scholarship recipients will be mentored by designated staff/faculty members who will work closely with scholars to provide ongoing support and ensure the scholars are on track with degree requirements.
Requirements:
- Students must have their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on University file.
- A 500–600-word essay describing the applicant’s academic interest and career goals must be submitted. Include the following topics in your essay:
- Identify one important life challenge that you experienced and overcame.
- What did you learn from that challenge and how has it impacted your drive for academic and professional success?
- If you are from an urban area or rural community, explain the nature of one of the main challenges that seem to be affecting the area?
- Submit your current, official High School transcript with the school’s seal and/or signature of an authorized school official .
- Submit two letters of recommendation: one from a High School Counselor and the other from a High School Teacher.
- Submit signed and dated application forms (If under the age of 18, include a parent/guardian’s signature as well).
Note: Applications with original essays will be considered highly favorable.

The USDA/1890 National Scholars Program is a partnership between the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the 1890 Historically Black Land-Grant Universities. The USDA/1890 National Scholars Program is implemented under the USDA Fellows Experience Program (FEP).
Scholarships are awarded annually and must be used at one of the 1890 Historically Black Land Grant Universities. Each award provides full tuition, as well as room and board, for the term of the scholarship. The scholarship may be renewed each year, contingent upon satisfactory academic performance and normal progress toward the bachelor’s degree.

The Langston University Agricultural Alumni Association (LUAAA) offers scholarships to high school students/incoming freshman and current students enrolled in the Sherman Lewis School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. Additional requirements are a 2.5 GPA, 300 word written essay, 15 hours of community service, one personal and two professional references and a personal letter indicating the need for financial assistance. The scholarship deadline for incoming freshmen is March 15th of each academic year. The scholarship deadline for currently enrolled students, it is June 30th. Students can contact their academic advisor or the Department Chairs in SL/SAAS to get the scholarship application form.

Oklahoma AgCredit offers $1,000 scholarships to members’ children who will graduate high school in the spring and attend Langston University in the fall of 2023.

The National Crop Insurance Service Scholarship has proudly provided scholarships to 20 students at 1890 Historically Black Land Grant Universities, such as Langston University to help them complete their education since 2001. It is part of the NCIS’ mission to help underserved communities in rural America with access to top risk management and marketing training and education to develop the agriculture workforce.
